Basis believes it’s easier to get and stay healthy when wellness is fun, social and informative. To put this within everyone’s reach, we invented the Basis Band – the world’s first connected health and heart rate monitor wearable on the wrist. Convenient and customizable, the multi-sensor Basis Band collects data like heart rate, calories burned, physical activity and sleep patterns. It links wirelessly to your personal dashboard where you can easily view performance, share data, earn rewards, and engage with the Basis community. Basis is backed by Norwest Venture Partners and DCM.
Jef Holove
CEO
Jef believes personal wellness is one of the most important trends of our time, at both the personal and societal levels.
Formerly CEO at Eye-Fi, Jef guided the company from a 2007 launch to international retail distribution for its device and service. Before that he was GM of audio and gaming at Logitech, where he also worked in U.S. and EMEA marketing. He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
A confessed gamer, Jef knows his occasional hike, scuba trip or Guitar Hero jam session isn't quite enough wellness, so these days he’s making good use of his running shoes― and his Basis Band.
Nadeem Kassam
Founder/Chief Alliance Officer
Nadeem has been a tireless champion for making wellness more engaging. An early believer in the future of connected sensors, Nadeem envisioned the Basis concept in 2005 and is thrilled to see the device and web experience coming together to help people live better.
Aside from being determined to one day merge games and wellness to solve the healthcare crisis, Nadeem has spent the better half of the last decade running Zynik Capital, which focuses on start-ups and organizations with high growth potential. He holds a B.A. from Babson College with a focus on entrepreneurship.
When he's not using his Basis Band to lower his heart rate and manage deep breathing sessions at the airport, Nadeem can be found running after his two young daughters while trying to convince them to eat green vegetables.
Bharat Vasan
Chief Operating Officer
Bharat is the mastermind behind shipping a polished product. His mantra is that well-designed technology can fundamentally alter the healthcare landscape by helping people take command of their own wellness.
Bharat joined Basis from Electronic Arts Online, where as COO he managed global mergers and acquisitions. Before that he was an investment banker at Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette. Bharat received a B.A. from Middlebury College and M.I.A from Columbia University.
A former varsity tennis player, Bharat is using his Basis Band to return to his glory days of fitness. He’s also an active public and foreign policy junkie.
Marco Della Torre
VP, Product Science
Marco leads the rockstar team of engineers behind our technology. He firmly believes Basis can make the whole world healthier by redefining wellness as a fun, social and integral part of life.
A serial entrepreneur, Marco recently secured key patents for Emotiv Systems and BAMLabs, two of his many inventions in biotech. He received degrees in computer and biomedical engineering from the University of New South Wales in his home town of Sydney, Australia.
Marco loves how the Basis Band tracks his physical activity at all times, whether it’s burning calories at a concert or capturing a spike in his heart rate after a close shave on his motorcycle.
Sean Tan
VP Engineering
Sean leads the brainiac team that puts the pieces together, himself driven by a passion for biotechnology and what he calls the “fun factor” of the Basis concept.
Sean’s extensive engineering background includes stints at Huawei, UTStarcom and Allied Telesyn. He received a master's in aerospace engineering from Carleton University in Canada and once created a human circulatory model for furthering cardiovascular device validation and design.
A former volleyball captain and active black belt student in Shotokan Karate, Sean makes fitness a priority in his life. He’s also an audiophile and can easily lose himself in audio gear and music.
Chris Verplaetse
VP, Device Development
Chris leads the engineering team that creates the devices that track your wellness. He is thrilled to be part of a movement that helps people take better care of themselves and live well.
Chris brings a wealth of consumer technology experience on the client and professional services side with brands such as North Face, Nike, Apple and most recently Flip Video. Chris received a M.S. at MIT and its renowned Media Laboratory as well as a B.S. in aerospace engineering from Boston University. He also holds numerous patents in the space.
Chris keeps himself active with basketball, surfing, golf, and a steady stream of adventures with his young son.
You'll be an important part of a small, smart, agile team free of meetings and big-company politics, and working on an interesting user-facing product.
